Serving an important role in the immune system, the spleen is a small organ that is located on the left side of the body, just below the rib cage. It serves to filter old cells out of the blood, and it helps to fight infections throughout the body. A spleen removal may become necessary due to a wide range of reasons, such as injury or infections, cancer, blood disorders, or a spleen that has become enlarged or ruptured.
The surgery to remove a spleen is called a splenectomy, and at Surgical Professionals, splenectomies are just one of the many important health services that we offer.
Our team is dedicated to your health, and we use the most advanced surgical techniques to improve outcomes and mitigate risk with every procedure. We have completed numerous splenectomies over the 20 years our practice has been operating, and our complete professionalism and commitment to the needs of our patients have been rewarded with outstanding results. We take most forms of insurance, and we work closely with our patients to make the surgery process as convenient as possible.

When Does a Splenectomy Become Necessary?
Your physician may recommend a spleen removal for a variety of reasons. Viral or bacterial infections like mononucleosis or syphilis may leave the spleen enlarged, as can certain cancers. An enlarged spleen can capture too many blood cells, clogging it, reducing its efficacy, and increasing the likelihood of infections, anemia, and other disorders. An enlarged spleen can also rupture, which can lead to life-threatening internal bleeding that requires immediate spleen removal. Similarly, blood disorders like anemia or ITP, spleen injuries, and spleen tumors can require removal of the spleen for proper treatment.
Types of Spleen Removal Surgery
There are two common types of spleen removal surgeries: the open splenectomy and the laparoscopic splenectomy. Both require full sedation, and at Surgical Professionals, we prefer the laparoscopic splenectomy where possible, as it is the least invasive.
Open Splenectomy
In this procedure, the abdomen is cut open down the center, and the surgeon gently moves aside other tissues to expose the spleen. An incision is made to remove the spleen, and the abdomen is closed with stitches when the operation is complete. Open splenectomies are often the best choice for ruptured spleens or patients with excessive scar tissue.
Laparoscopic Splenectomy
In this procedure, small incisions are made strategically in the abdomen, and a camera is inserted to allow the surgeon to monitor the procedure. Small tools are used to remove the spleen in a minimally invasive manner, allowing for fewer stitches, faster healing, and shorter recovery times.
At Surgical Professionals, we offer both procedures, and we will use the method that provides the best results based on the input of your physician, the reason for spleen removal, and other pertinent factors.
