Who Needs Breast Surgery?

Recovering From Breast Surgery

Recovery from breast surgery depends on the type of surgery performed. For instance, recovery from a double mastectomy can take anywhere from four to six weeks. Conversely, recovery from a lumpectomy may take only a few days to a week.

Following the procedure, you will spend several hours in the post-op area recovering from the surgery. This allows the medical team to monitor your health as the anesthetic wears off. During this period, the medical team will monitor your blood pressure, heart rate, and other vital factors.

Breast Surgery Recovery FAQs

Will I be in a lot of pain after surgery?

Pain and discomfort are common after breast surgery, both immediately after and during the healing process. Generally, your pain will not be excessive.

Your surgeon will prescribe pain medications and recommend arm exercises to control and alleviate these problems and encourage a healthy recovery.

How much help will I need when I come home?

We recommend that someone stay with you for at least the first 24 hours after surgery.

Recovery from breast surgeries can take some time, and you’ll face a combination of fatigue and difficulty using the adjacent arm or arms. Immediately after returning home, you’ll probably want friends or family to handle household chores, cooking, child care, shopping, etc.

Trust your body and your surgeon’s instructions as you regain your strength, and don’t risk taking on more than you can manage too soon.

What precautions should I take as I recover?

Listen to your surgeon’s instructions, even if they seem a bit too restrictive.

Be alert to situations that could damage or open your sutures — that means putting yourself in situations in which you might fall or accidentally move quickly or intensely, bathing or showering immediately after surgery instead of using sponge baths, etc. Do not drive until you can engage in your normal range of motion without pain.

You’ll also want to keep up with any recommended exercises as instructed, even if they’re unpleasant, lest your body may heal incorrectly and potentially form scar tissue or become stiff.

When can I return to my normal routine and activities?

Recovery will vary based on the surgery performed and your body’s healing process.

While most patients will be back to normal activities in days to weeks, depending on whether they have a lumpectomy or mastectomy, others may suffer chronic fatigue or face a slower recovery in the months following their procedure.

Your general health before your procedure and recovery-inhibiting habits, such as smoking, can significantly affect recovery time — but it all depends on your unique situation. Smoking, in particular, can interfere with healing and, in some cases, can even cause a healing wound to fail. Consult your surgeon to determine a likely recovery timeline.
